Before founding his own consulting practice in 2001, Clayton worked for some of the world's premier management consultants, including Towers Perrin, A.T. Kearney, and Accenture, advising global organizations on issues of strategy, operations, and change management.

Clayton's work in the non-profit sector began early in his career, when he first collaborated with the International Labor Office of the United Nations and The World Bank in evaluating alternative approaches to tourism and economic development. He continued to serve clients in both the private and public sectors for the next 20 years.

Clayton graduated from the University of Rochester, with concentrations in anthropology and art history, where he was awarded the Genesee Scholarship and the Francis G. Wells Scholarship for academic excellence. He completed his master's degree in psychology at the University of Pittsburgh, where he graduated with high honors. Subsequently, he completed the requirements for a Ph.D. in applied anthropology at Southern Illinois University (Carbondale), where he was a Special Doctoral Assistant.

Clayton was elected to the Board of the Los Angeles Institute of Contemporary Art, where he served as Treasurer. He also served on the 20th Century Acquisitions Committee of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. He currently serves on the Internal Advisory Board of Project-X Foundation, Los Angeles.
